About Ei-Wa International

What is Ei-Wa International and what makes it different from other language schools?
Ei-Wa International isn’t a large corporation or institution. It is a service. It is an individual.  One person with a passion to help people enrich their lives through language.

EWI is a partnership between me and my students. My goal is simply to help you reach your goal.  Part of my approach is to get to know my students.  Knowing your goals and motivations helps me design lessons that focus on specific communication skills you want to learn.  Knowing your interests and experiences helps me design lessons that are interesting, personal and relevant to you.

EWI values relationships as a platform for success.  Language, at its core, is about relationships.  The way we communicate is essential to how we connect with others in all aspects of our lives – at home, at school, at work, at the grocery store, at the doctor’s office, at the baseball game, etc.  Therefore I believe the key to successfully teaching a language is by forming meaningful connections with my students that show that I care about what is important to them.

What does Ei-Wa mean anyway?
Ei-Wa (ei as in aim, wa as in wash) simply means “English-Japanese.”   For example, an eiwa jiten is an “English-Japanese dictionary.”  The name Ei-Wa International embodies my desire to promote a prosperous international relationship between Japan and the United States through language study.

Why Choose EWI?
EWI offers a S.A.F.E way to learn – one that is simple, affordable, fun and effective.  It is also safe in that what I offer is realistic and reliable.  EWI is not a large corporate institution focused on making a profit; it is a single individual who is focused on helping you.  I don’t make unrealistic promises such as to make you fluent or literate in 5 weeks.  But what I do offer is a commitment to give you a valuable and enjoyable learning experience that puts you on a path to success.  I would be happy to partner with you to help make your language goals a reality!

EWI has three areas of focus – ESL, Adult Literacy and Japanese.

The Importance of ESL (English as a Second Language)
Several years ago, I had the opportunity to live and work in Japan.  Living overseas really showed me how challenging everyday life can be for someone living in a country where the native language is not your own.  There are so many things that I take for granted as a native English-speaker living in America.  I realized that “simple” things like going to the bank or post office, or even grocery shopping can be very intimidating experiences when you are not confident in your language skills.  That is why I feel it is so important for non-English speakers in America to have access to affordable and effective ESL instruction that helps them build fluency and confidence - making their lives a little easier.

The Importance of Adult Literacy
"Literacy is understanding, evaluating, using and engaging with written text to participate in the society, to achieve one's goals and to develop one's knowledge and potential." - PIAAC .  When I obtained my certification to teach Adult Reading and Writing in 2011, I was surprised to learn how many adults in the United States struggle with literacy.  According to a 2017 survey by the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), 19% of adults in the U.S. read at a Below Basic reading level*.  That’s over 60 million people!   My aim is to reach those who fall below the basic reading level.
*Prose Reading Level:  “The knowledge and skills needed to perform prose tasks, (i.e., to search, comprehend, and use continuous texts).  Examples include editorials, news stories, brochures, and instructional materials." - NAAL

The Joy of Japanese
Since childhood I have had a passion for Japan – its people, its culture and of course its language.  At EWI I teach Japanese for the simple fact that I enjoy it!  It is my personal desire to help promote strong friendly relationships between Japan and the U.S. one person at a time.
